The Global Horizons: International Careers initiative was launched in 2014 to engage Irish students in international affairs and the work of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in promoting Ireland’s interests and values around the globe.
This programme sees staff from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade visit a number of graduate and post graduate careers fairs around the country. The aim of this is to highlight internship and career opportunities with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, state agencies and international organisations.
As a small country, with one of the world’s most open economies, Ireland places a special value on its membership of international organisations. Accession to the United Nations (UN) in 1955 and the European Union (EU) in 1973 were key milestones in the state’s development, while membership of other organisations, such as the Council of Europe (COE), World Bank and Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), are similarly fundamental to our national interests, security and values. Irish citizens make an enormous contribution in staffing these organisations, with Irish graduates recruited each year to junior management, policy analyst and specialist roles in Brussels, Washington, Strasbourg and New York.
Global Horizons: International Careers involves close collaboration with the Department of the Taoiseach’s ‘EU Jobs’ campaign and the Public Appointments Service.
