Minister Flanagan congratulates Arlene Foster on her election as the new DUP Leader

Ireland, Minister Charles Flanagan, Northern Ireland Peace Process, Press Releases, Northern Ireland, 2015

Following today’s election of Arlene Foster MLA as leader of the DUP, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan, TD, stated:

“I wish to warmly congratulate Arlene Foster on her election today as the new leader of the Democratic Unionist Party. This great honour is hugely deserved and a real statement of the very high regard to which Arlene is held by her fellow party members. I am sure this is a very proud and special day for Arlene and her family.

“I have had the privilege and pleasure of working closely with Arlene in her current role as a Minister in the NI Executive, most recently during the talks which led to the Fresh Start Agreement. I can testify to her great professionalism, dedication and strength of mind which I am sure will serve her well as the new leader of the DUP.

“I look forward to continuing to work closely with Arlene in her new role as DUP Leader. I believe we share the same objective and determination to advance peace and stability in Northern Ireland for the benefit of all its people. Our first task together will be to drive forward the implementation of the Fresh Start Agreement and to work to resolve all outstanding issues, especially around the legacy of the past.

“I wish Arlene all the best in her new role as DUP Leader and again congratulate her on her success.”
