Statement by Minister Coveney on forest fires in Portugal

"I have been saddened to learn of the high number of casualties caused by forest fires in Portugal.

"My Department is monitoring this situation closely through the Embassy of Ireland in Lisbon and the Consular Division in Dublin. At present, we advise against travel to the Pedrogão Grande area of Portugal until the fires are brought under control and until the Portuguese authorities confirm that the area is safe for travel.

"On behalf of the Irish government, I wish to express our condolences to the people of Portugal at this time."
