What is the best way to apply for my passport?
If you are over 18, currently hold an Irish passport and are not changing your name or want observations in your passport, you may be able to apply for your passport online. See further information on the online application process. If you are not eligible, or do not wish, to submit your application online, you can still apply via Passport Express.
Passport Express is the only postal method accepted in Ireland to apply for your passport. Applications submitted by ordinary or registered post will be returned to the applicant and will not be processed. This will cause a delay in your application process. Apply through your local post office, in Ireland and Northern Ireland, and the Passport Service will aim to have passports back in 15 working days from the day we receive the application (this is subject to the demand at the time). For first time applicants or those who are replacing lost or stolen books, the processing time can take at least 20 working days. Please consult our current turnaround times.
Once your passport application is submitted, it is not possible to fast track it or submit another application at the counter.
If you're travelling in less than 15 working days you can make an appointment with the Passport Office. If you don't have an appointment you will not be seen.
Please note that first time adult applications are subject to a minimum turnaround of 20 working days when submitting an application in person at the Passport Office in Dublin or Cork.
Our Dublin office currently operates on an appointment basis from 9am to 4.50pm, Monday to Friday.
Our Cork office also currently operates on an appointment basis from 9am to 4.50pm, Monday to Friday.
